Sperrins Gateway's Heritage Hedgerows

The Sperrins Gateway Landscape Partnership aims to increase awareness and knowledge of the countryside skill of hedgelaying and the importance of hedgerows for biodiversity in the Sperrins Gateway landscape.

Working in partnership with CAFRE (Greenmount College) and the Hedge laying Association of Ireland a series of community workshops introducing the management technique, history of the skill and its benefits to the landscape will be delivered to local people and landowners.

Further to the introductory sessions and promotion of the importance of good hedgerow management for both biodiversity and stock proofing, the project will deliver competency training in this traditional skill. A minimum of six local people will avail of the opportunity to complete the City and Guilds accredited training course.  This project will support the retention of heritage skills at the same time rejuvenate local hedgerows and increase the value and appreciation of hedgerows with the Sperrins area.
