Sperrins Gateway

Moyola Salmon and Dollaghan in the Classroom

This project worked in partnership with the Moyola Angling Association and delivered the Salmon and Dollaghan in the Classroom programme to a select number of primary schools along the Moyola river in the Sperrins Gateway landscape. This programme is an instrumental learning tool that gives the children the opportunity to raise, care and maintain salmonids in their classroom, release the fry into the river system and visit the DCAL Bushmills Salmon Station.

This innovative, science-based project has provided some of the best hands-on learning that children can experience and will include learning about the native fish, river habitats, conservation in action, water safety and the importance of the river environment for biodiversity, drinking water, tourism and leisure. A key part of the project is learning about and actually looking after salmon eggs from a hatchery through their life stage; it will include relevant class fieldtrips, with experts, to a small number of key sites and will culminate in the release of young fry into the Moyola catchment.
