Lime mortar use training

Lime mortar was traditionally used in the buildings and built structures of the area, including the old gateways and lime kilns. During the last 100 years artificial cements have taken over from the natural hydraulic lime based mortars and plasters, to such a degree that virtually all construction is now carried out using cement based materials.

Now, few construction workers have used the natural lime based mortars that were in use for hundreds of years before the invention of cement. The inflexibility and strength of cement means that its use on top of lime based mortars can cause additional damage to structures, creating cracks and problems with moisture.

Sperrins Gateway Landscape Partnership and partner organisation Network Personnel Ltd. are providing skills training in traditional natural lime mortar use as part of the Up for Work initiative

This is funded by Heritage Lottery Fund and the European Social Fund.
